꼭 가봐야 할 명소
Updated May 2026 · Buy the 2-day Ichan-Kala pass at the West Gate (Ata Darvoza) — ~250,000 UZS covers most ticketed sites.
Ichan-Kala (inner walled city)
The entire UNESCO old town — wander without a plan. Gates, lanes, and craft workshops; best at sunrise before groups arrive and again at golden hour on the walls.
Kalta Minor
Unfinished turquoise minaret dominating the west gate — Khiva’s icon. Photograph from the square; the tilework close-up rewards a slow walk around the base.
Kunya-Ark (Old Fortress)
Khan’s citadel with throne room, harem courtyard, and watchtower views over the rooftops. Climb the ramparts for the classic Ichan-Kala panorama.
Islam Khoja Minaret
Tallest minaret in Khiva — narrow spiral climb for sweeping desert-and-city views. Not for vertigo; go early before heat and queues.
Juma Mosque
Forest of carved wooden columns inside a low dome — quiet, cool, and unlike any other mosque in Uzbekistan. Remove shoes; women cover hair.
Tash-Khauli Palace
Blue-tiled harem courtyard and reception halls — intricate ichak (summer) and khan’s chambers. Often combined with Kunya-Ark in one morning.
2-day Khiva itinerary
- Day 1 — West gate & core Buy pass at Ata Darvoza → Kalta Minor → Kunya-Ark → Islam Khoja (climb if open) → Juma Mosque → dinner inside the walls (many guesthouses serve plov).
- Day 2 — Palaces & walls Tash-Khauli → Pakhlavan Mahmud mausoleum → Muhammad Amin Khan madrasah → walk outer ramparts at sunset → optional taxi to Nurullabai Palace outside the east gate.
Getting there
Urgench (UGC) airport or train station, then taxi (~30 min) to Khiva. From Bukhara: domestic flight (~1 h) or overnight train — slower but scenic. Shared taxis run between Bukhara and Khiva in shoulder season (confirm safety and price).
Best season
Mar–May and Sep–Oct — warm days, cool evenings on the walls. Summer is very hot in Khorezm; sightsee 7–10 am. Winter is quiet and atmospheric for photography.
